What Causes Knee Pain?

The short answer: a lot of things can cause knee pain. It’s a common condition with a huge range of potential causes, from sports-related inflammation to autoimmune diseases. That’s why it’s so important to visit a specialist if you’re experiencing pain. They can help you diagnose your problem and prescribe methods to address it.

That being said, here are some of the most common causes of knee pain.

Common Causes of Knee Pain

1. Muscle strain

This kind of knee pain is most likely related to an active lifestyle. Certain types of exercise, while they might be great for our overall health, can lead to knee pain overtime. Two of the most common culprits are running and skiing. It’s important to note that even if you don’t experience the pain while you are directly engaged in an activity, it could still be related. Sometimes the strain built up over time causes knees to hurt at odd times, like in the early morning or even on cold days.

2. Past injuries

Knees are delicate and intricate combinations of muscle, fluid and bone. Whenever something goes wrong in one place, it can affect the whole knee. Even injuries you received years ago can contribute to your knee pain. Two of the most common injuries that cause long-term pair are tears in your knee cartilage, or damage to your knee ligament.

3. Arthritis

If you have swelling combined with difficulties bending your knee, you may have a form of arthritis. Knee arthritis is one of the most common causes of knee pain and comes in three different forms:

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease where tissues around the joint of the knee get thicker and become inflamed.

Post-traumatic arthritis is arthritis caused by a serious knee injury in the past.

Osteoarthritis is the gradual wearing down of the cartilage in the knee. It’s the most common type of knee arthritis, and typically occurs in those over 50
