The holidays are coming, and with it the cold weather, seasonal indulgences, and lack of exercise can sabotage your health. Here’s what you can do to stay illness-free and healthy over the holiday season.
Practice Mindful Eating
It’s easy to get carried away with holiday feasts that are high in calories. To prevent weight gain, practice mindful eating by making healthy food swaps. For example, fill half your plate with veggies and drink plenty of water to help with digestion. These simple changes can make sure you’re getting beneficial nutrients while helping you avoid overeating.
Plan Physical Activities
It’s common to slow down the exercise and physical activity during the cooler holiday months. However, it’s even more important to stay active during this period. Besides being good for your overall health, exercise can help your mental health and aid in stress relief.
Limit Your Alcohol Intake
A holiday is the perfect occasion to raise your glasses and toast to your blessings. However, alcohol is full of empty calories and can cause damage to your body. Plus, excessive drinking can lead to a nasty hangover. Women should limit their alcohol consumption to 2 glasses a day while men should limit to 3.
Prevent the Spread of Infections
Between hugs, kisses, and handshakes, infections like the flu or colds can easily spread. Prevent sickness from spreading by washing your hands often and keeping your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth. Plus, always keep a small bottle of antibacterial gel on hand. Finally, if you are feeling sick, stay in bed so you don’t infect your family or co-workers.
The holidays are a time to make family memories and indulge in buffets, desserts, cheeses, and meats. While it’s important to keep your healthy habits in check, it’s okay to give yourself some wiggle room. If you need help balancing your health and happiness, call Lakeview Family Medicine today.
