Mental Health Q&A
What Is Mental Health?
Mental health focuses on your emotional, psychological, and social well-being. When your mental health is strong, you’re better able to manage stress, build healthy relationships, and handle daily challenges with resilience and confidence.
Mental health can be influenced by a variety of factors, including genetics, past experiences, environment, and lifestyle habits. Eating well, staying active, getting enough sleep, and developing effective coping strategies all play an important role in maintaining good mental health.
Common Mental Health Conditions We Treat
At Lakeview Family Medicine, we provide care for several common mental health conditions, including:
Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
ADHD is a chronic condition that often begins in childhood but can continue into adulthood. It’s marked by hyperactivity, impulsiveness, and difficulty focusing. When untreated, ADHD can interfere with success at school, work, or home. Treatment may include medication, behavioral support, and lifestyle adjustments.
Anxiety
Feeling anxious occasionally is normal, but if persistent worry interferes with your daily life, you may have an anxiety disorder such as Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Anxiety can affect your energy, relationships, and overall well-being. Treatment may involve lifestyle changes, counseling, and medication when appropriate.
Depression
Depression is more than feeling sad — it involves deep, lasting feelings of hopelessness, fatigue, and loss of interest in daily activities. In some cases, it can lead to suicidal thoughts. About 7% of Americans experience major depression each year. Treatment often includes therapy, medication, and supportive lifestyle changes.
What to Expect During a Mental Health Appointment
Your visit will begin with a general physical exam, a review of your health history, and a conversation about your symptoms and lifestyle. Your provider may also order lab tests to rule out physical health issues that could be affecting your mood.
You'll complete a short questionnaire and undergo a psychological evaluation. Based on your results, your provider will create a personalized care plan that may include medication, lifestyle guidance, and — when needed — referrals to trusted mental health specialists for talk therapy or additional support.
Bilingual Care Available
