Tips for a Healthy Summer Vacation

Summertime is in full effect, which means your mind has likely turned to planning a vacation. Whether you’re heading to the beach, a lake house, or tropical island, it’s important to keep your health and safety at the forefront. Here are some top tips to help you stay healthy and active during your summer trips.

Summer Health Tips

Apply Sunscreen

Applying sunscreen is perhaps the most obvious summer vacation health tip. But do you know how much or how often? We recommend applying 1 ounce of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before heading outside. Reapply every 2 hours or immediately after swimming. Plus, be sure to use an SPF of 15 or higher every day.

Drink H2O

Unfortunately, too much fun in the sun can be dangerous. High temperatures make you sweat excessively, which means you’re constantly losing fluids. This can lead to dehydration, heat stroke, heat cramps, and heat exhaustion. To replenish these fluids, drink approximately 2 liters of water throughout the day. To determine how hydrated you are, use the color of your urine as a guide. Remember, the clearer the better.

Avoid Airport Germs

Vacation time sometimes involves flying the friendly skies. Although airports and airplanes are necessary to get from point A to point B, they’re also full of bacteria and germs. To avoid getting sick, make sure to always pack hand sanitizer, avoid touching your face, consider wearing nasal screens or masks, and wipe down all surfaces, including trays, tables, and armrests.

Wear Sunglasses

Don’t forget about the health of your eyes. To protect your eyes from the sun, wear sunglasses that protect your lens, cornea, eyelid, and surrounding skin. We recommend selecting sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays.
