How to Keep Young Athletes Healthy

If your child is involved in sports, you understand the importance of proper nutrition and body-conditioning needed for children to stay healthy on and off the field. Highly competitive sports follow rigorous training schedules that can lead to injuries if the body isn’t prepared and protected. Here are a few tips on how to keep young athletes healthy and injury-free.

Tips for Young Athletes

1. Eat a healthy diet
Young athletes should eat a well-balanced diet to properly fuel the body. Load up on protein-rich foods, complex carbohydrates, fruits, and vegetables. Avoid high-fat foods, sugar-loaded drinks, and fast food. If you’re concerned about your child’s nutrition, our health consultants can help determine a diet plan that fits their unique needs.

2. Drink plenty of water
Proper hydration is a key element in health and fitness. We recommend young athletes drinking five to eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day.

3. Follow a warm up routine
Your child should always include a warm-up and stretching session before every game, practice, and workout. A warm up routine can consist of jogging, jumping rope, or lifting small weights. Warming up will increase delivery of oxygen and nutrients to your muscles, prepare muscles for stretching, and prepare your heart for increased activity.

4. Get adequate rest
Rest and recovery is an essential element in any exercise routine, particularly in high-performing athletes. During the recovery period, the body replenishes muscle glycogen and repairs body tissues. Sleep is also important in an athlete’s performance. We recommend young athletes get at least eight hours of sleep a night.
