How to Have a Safe and Spooky Halloween

It’s officially October, which means you and your family are gearing up for Halloween. From decorating your home, choosing costumes, and making plans to trick-or-treat, preparations tend to start early for parents. Although this spooky holiday is meant for fun and frights, it’s important to take precautions in order to keep your children safe. Follow these pointers for a safe, stress-free, and spooky Halloween.

Trick-or-Treat Safely

Trick-or-treat with a group and set up a buddy system for a fun and safe night. Before heading out for the night, have a route mapped out. We recommend sticking to streets and neighborhoods that you’re familiar with. Bring a flashlight in case you’re out longer than you planned.

Examine Your Children’s Treats

Before your child munches on any Halloween candy, be sure to check for signs of tampering and choking hazards. Throw away any homemade treats made by strangers.

Limit Candy Consumption

It’s perfectly normal to be more lenient about candy eating on Halloween. However, if your child tends to overdo it, consider setting a limit on their candy consumption. Encourage your child to be mindful about the amount of candy eaten, and teach them how to stop when they are full.

Choose a Safe and Visible Costume

Costumes are one of the most important parts of Halloween. Whether you’re crafting a costume or purchasing one from the Halloween store, it should be visible at night. If not, use a glow stick, flashlight, or reflector to add some visibility. Ensure that the costume is a safe length to avoid tripping.
