Do I Have Pre-Diabetes?

As the American population continues to become overweight or obese, diabetes is becoming increasingly prevalent. If the chronic disease runs in your family, you may have wondered if you’re next. To help you understand pre-diabetes and how to prevent type 2 diabetes, here are some basic facts.

What is pre-diabetes?

Pre-diabetes is essentially a pre-diagnosis of diabetes. It’s a condition where your blood sugar levels are higher than average but not high enough for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Also referred to as “impaired glucose tolerance,” pre-diabetes occurs when the pancreas can’t produce sufficient insulin to compensate for the high levels of glucose.

What causes pre-diabetes?

The exact cause of insulin resistance remains unknown. However, experts agree that excess weight and lack of physical activity can contribute to the disease. Leading a sedentary lifestyle and eating an unhealthy diet may increase the risk of pre-diabetes and can also lead to additional health problems.

Can I prevent pre-diabetes from becoming diabetes?

Having pre-diabetes doesn’t mean you’re destined for type 2 diabetes. However, preventing and treating the condition requires a proactive approach. To reverse the disease, we recommend consistent exercise and a healthy diet in order to lose body fat, control blood sugar, and improve muscle strength.
