6 Unexpectedly Common Allergens

Finding weird rashes or bumps? Can’t stop sneezing, even though “allergy season” is long gone? The truth is, there are a lot of things that the body can react poorly to. You could have an allergy you may not have even realized existed. There’s far more beyond pollen and peanut butter that can wreak havoc on your body’s defense system.

We’ve listed below six allergens that are more common than you think. These “sleeper allergens” don’t get as much press, but they do affect a fair percentage of the population. If you suspect one of these might be troubling you, be sure visit your doctor.

  1. Sunscreen

If you break out in hives after spending time in the sun, you might think you have a sun allergy. Although this could certainly be the case, you might have a sunscreen allergy instead. Try applying your sunscreen indoors and waiting an hour or two to test what the real culprit is. If your sunscreen is giving you trouble, you might want to switch to one that does not contain benzophenone, octocrylene, or PABA, all which can be irritants.

  1. Water treatment chemicals

PPMS is a chemical often used to treat the water in hot tubs and pools. It’s also a potential skin irritant, and can cause dermatitis in those who are highly sensitive to it. People typically think of pools and hot tubs as unlikely to cause allergic reactions, but they do quite frequently.

  1. Bug stings

Although honeybee stings are the most famous of potential bug-related allergens, there are other bites that set off allergies. Fire ants, wasps, hornets, and yellow jacket stings can all produce mild to severe reactions, depending on the victim.

  1. Cow’s milk

This allergy is is found among 2.5% of children under the age of three. It’s different than lactose intolerance, which affects the digestive system and can cause gas, bloating, etc. The cow’s milk allergy instead manifests with hives, breathing difficulties, and even potentially deadly symptoms like anaphylaxis.

  1. Hair products

You might think that you have a genetically itchy scalp or a propensity for red bumps on your back, but you could instead be allergic to one of your hair products. Hair dye contains the most potent mix of chemicals, and is the most common source of a bad reaction. However, hairspray, extension glue, and even common hair conditioners can cause allergic reactions.

If any of these allergens seems like a possibility to you, come into our clinic to get tested. We can help further pinpoint what the problem is, and get you the allergy relief you need.
